HISD's Summer Reading Program
What is the Millionaire Club?
The Millionaire Club is a coordinated effort by the Departments of Library Services and Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment to keep HISD students reading over the summer months. The title came from the reading goal that was set: 200,000 HISD Students reading 5 books over the summer for a total of one million books!
Why are we doing it?
The Millionare Club is one way that HISD is addressing the phenomenon known as "summer slide" or "summer loss". Research conducted by James Kim (2005) shows that the reading skills of lower income students can improve over the summer if they are able to select and read books at their interest and reading level.
What do Bellaire Students Need to Do?
Click on the appropriate link to discover the required summer reading for your fall English class. Included is a Reading Log. Read five or more books over the summer, including books from your required summer reading list. Fill out the log and be prepared to turn it in when you return to school in the fall in order to be eligible to receive recognition for participating in the Millionaire Club.
