APRIL

HISD and Hadassah, an international women services organization, conducted a breast cancer awareness program for eleventh grade girls and a testicular cancer awareness program for eleventh grade boys at Bellaire High School on February 9, 2005. Hadassah volunteers, physicians, and nurses from the medical community conducted the program. In conjunction with these group sessions, an approved educational information packet was distributed to each girl and boy in attendance.

Bellaire High School participated in the 2005 Lymphoma Society's Pennies For Patients Campaign February 1-21, 2005. Pennies For Patients is a national fund-raising effort to help find the cure for leukemia and related blood cancers. We are excited about our participation this year. We collected $2775. The monies collected was donated to the Lymphoma Society in honor of Jhonathan Herrera, a former Bellaire School student.

Bellaire High School participated in the School Physical Activity and Nutrition (SPAN) Project on April 27, 2005. The study was designed to monitor the prevalence and degree to which school children in Harris county are overweight. This study will identify factors that influence the development of obesity in children. This project will provide county-level data that can be used to support new initiatives or interventions.

April 29, 2005 Nurse Lott was honored for outstanding service to students in the Pregnant and Parenting Teen Program at BHS.

May 5, 2005 Teen Pregnant and Parenting Program Annual Seniors Recognition and Graduation Transition Forum: From High School to Higher Education. BHS had two honorees in this celebration.

May 9, 2005 School Nurses to attend Magnet Night to review incoming 9th Graders immunization records for compliance.

May 11, 2005 NATIONAL SCHOOL NURSE DAY.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for allowing us to serve you as the School Nurses of Bellaire High School, not only for the students but the staff and any visitors on campus. It is an honor as well as a privilege. Our goal is to promote a healthy, safe and nurturing environment on our campus as well as improving student health which impacts educational achievement and academic success. Notices have been sent out to students who need to obtain immunizations over the summer. Class schedules will be held in the Fall 2005 until compliance is obtained.

ATTENTION PARENTS:

The SuperKids Pediatric Mobile Clinic will be at Bellaire High School on Monday, June 6, 2005 between 9am and 12pm to provide FREE vaccinations and help with health insurance for your children.   Please bring your child’s shot record with you. Don’t wait till the last minute to get your vaccines!!
