Please read carefully

There is NO APPLICATION!
AGREEMENT FORMS MUST BE ON FILE FOR SCHEDULING INTO VANGUARD CLASSES

Student receive Vanguard Agreement Forms when they enroll:
For zoned HISD students, this is when BHS Counselors visit HISD middle schools.
For zoned students in private school, this is on Private School Enrollment Night, to be announced later.
For magnet students, this is on Magnet Program Enrollement Night, to be announced later.

IB is for 11th and 12th grade students only. We only have a Diploma Program. Student interested in the IB Program need to take Pre AP classes in 9th grade to prepare for the upper division classes they will take later.
See our IB page for more information

Vanguard Agreements should be turned in when your 8th grade student submits his course requests or by April 30th.
This agreement must be on file in order for a student to be scheduled in a Vanguard class.

BHS counselors come to HISD middle schools in the Bellaire feeder pattern in the spring. Students will get information on which classes to take during these visits.

There will be evening meetings for students attending private middle schools who are zoned to Bellaire HS.

Students who are not zoned to Bellaire HS must first be accepted to the Bellaire World Languages Magnet Program. They will get information about Pre AP classes when they have been accepted to the Magnet Program.

Students will not be scheduled into advanced classes without a valid agreement on file.

Bellaire HS has a policy of open enrollment for Pre AP classes. We count on parents and students to be judicious in selecting advanced classes. Students must turn in a Pre AP Agreement Form to take advanced classes. Your student may take all the advanced classes for which he has the prerequisite and for which you feel he is qualified. There are certain caveats outlined on the form and some listed below that should be heeded.

Parents, along with their students, should consider the following questions and implications as they review their student’s schedule for next year

Please make reasonable informed choices

  1. Is your child self-motivated, an independent worker, and organized?
  2. Does your child have good study skills? Is there a place away from the television and an internet connected computer with instant messaging where he does homework every night?
  3. Does your child maintain a daily planner and keep up with long-term assignments?
  4. As a parent, do you have time and are you willing to help your child with his organizational needs on a daily basis?
  5. Is your child involved with one or more extra-curricular activities? How much time outside the school day is required for each activity per day / per week?
  6. Does your child have a job? If so, how many hours per week are spent at work?
  7. Is your child involved in church activities or service activities such as scouting? Does your child have household responsibilities? If so, how many hours per week are spent on these activities?
  8. How much sleep per night does your child require to feel rested and be productive the following day?
  9. For each course in which your child plans to enroll, how much study time on average will be required? Is your child a fast reader with good retention? Does your child make notes as he reads? Does your child retain information from class well?
  10. How well does your child handle stressful situations? Is your child realistic about his performance expectations? As a parent, are you realistic about expectations you have of your child?

We are not accepting Vanguard Agreements for non-zoned students. Students not zoned to Bellaire High School must go through the Magnet Office to be approved for a transfer before they can be considered for Vanguard courses. Students accepted to the Bellaire Magnet Program will receive information regarding Vanguard classes with their notification.

If for some reason, you have a question about the procedure, please email the Bellaire G/T Coordinator, Mr. Schaaf, jschaaf@houstonisd.org
