VIPS: Volunteers in Public Schools

All BHS Parents/guardians are encouraged to get involved at BHS by volunteering, either on a regular basis or for special events. When parents are involved, students achieve more, regardless of socio-economic status, ethnic/racial background, or the parent's education level. When parents are involved, students exhibit more positive attitudes and behavior, are more likely to graduate, and are more likely to pursue post secondary education.

Some of the volunteer opportunities at BHS are:

• Information Center: Work a 2- to 4-hour shift weekly or every other week answering the phone, directing calls, and providing information.
• PTO Food Sales: Volunteer during lunch on Tuesdays and Wednesdays selling food.
• Library: Help the librarian with a variety of duties (any day), or make ID badges on Thursdays.
• School Tours: Conduct tours for prospective students and parents (November through May).
• Baking/Hospitality: Sign up and you will be called as needed to bring goodies or supplies.
• Attendance Office: Call homes when students are not at school, and help with other duties as needed.
• Counselors' Office: Assist with distributing schedules the first week of each semester, and with special short term assignments.
• Magnet Office: Magnet Coordinator will call as needed for special assignments.
• Field Trip Chaperones: Assist on teacher request. Let the teacher know you are available if a chaperone is needed.
• Cardinal Camp: Help out at the beginning of August with freshman orientation activities.

Volunteers may be needed to help in these areas.

Note that all volunteers are now required by HISD to sign a form every year giving permission for a background check. This form can be downloaded as an Adobe pdf here in Engish or en español. This form must be turned in to Gloria Richter in the office.
